A Syrian official source said Damascus, based on keenness to stop the Israeli atrocious aggression on Lebanon and spare the lives of the Lebanese brothers and their infrastructure, has called since the start of the aggression for an immediate and unconditional cease-fire but known circles didn’t allow the UN Security Council to reach that objective.

The source added that Syria, taking notice of the content of the resolution No. 1701, and in light of the historical achievements fulfilled by the Lebanese national resistance and the heroic steadfastness of the Lebanese people, has already hoped that the Security Council was going to issue a balanced resolution to maintain Lebanon’s interests, meet the country’s legitimate demands in the liberation of all its occupied territories and safeguard its sovereignty and national independence.

“Syria took notice of the content of the resolution in terms of confirming on the cessation of military actions, the withdrawal of the Israeli troops from the Lebanese territories to beyond the ‘blue line’, the return of the displaced to their villages and urging the international community to help Lebanon rebuild what Israeli war machine had destroyed as well as enhancing the role of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in cooperation with the Lebanese army in the south,” the source said.

The official source said Syria also took notice that the UN resolution confirmed importance of establishing a just and comprehensive peace in the iddle East based on the UN resolutions 242 and 228, a move envisaged to allow tackling the roots of the conflict in the region to bring about security and stability in it. “Syria is looking for the UN Security Council and the parties concerned to do what is required from them as stated by the resolution 1701 so that Syria can confirm its commitments in line with the UN Security Council relevant resolutions and the UN Charter,” the source said.

The source expressed Syria’s support to the Lebanese national consensus and the reservations expressed by the Lebanese official stance over the said Security Council resolution. Syria expresses deep sorrow that this resolution didn’t take into consideration many of the Lebanese demands. Besides, the resolution avoided holding Israel responsible for its brutal aggression on the innocent civilians and deliberate destruction of the Lebanese infrastructure in a way that amounts to war crimes. “In addition to that, the resolution contains several items of internal Lebanese affairs upon which the Lebanese agreed, with confirmation that the framework which judges any field confrontations that could emerge between the cessation of military actions and the Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon is April Understanding for 1996 which spars the lives of civilians on both sides and gives the Lebanese resistance a right to continue fighting as long as Israeli soldiers exist on the Lebanese territories,” the source concluded .
