Freeing Golan Heights inevitable - Syrian info Minister

DAMASCUS, March 12 (KUNA) -- Restoring Syrian sovereignty over the Golan Heights to Syria is "inevitable", said Syrian Minister of Information Mohsen Belal Monday, adding his country was actively working to that end in accordance with international legitimacy, the UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, and the 'Land for Peace' principle.

In a statement to the press, Belal urged the US, in its capacity as a sponsor, to revive the peace process in the region according to international resolutions and the Madrid declaration.

Syria's Information Minster pointed out that Israel was ever working on arousing tensions in the region.

Belal referred to the Baghdad Security Conference held in the Iraqi capital earlier this week as "constructive and positive", underlining his country's contribution there. The event was attended by representatives of Iraq's neighbors and the UNSC five permanent member states.

Belal renewed the call for a schedule for withdrawing US and UK troops from Iraq.

"Syria has taken part in that conference for the sake of Iraq and the Iraqis, to save the country, maintain national unity, and dismiss the ghost of civil war" Belal said. "Syria would like one Iraq - people, government, land, and parliament-. It is working as hard as ever to realize reconciliation among the Iraqi people." As for the forthcoming Arab Summit in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, by the end of the month, Belal underscored the need for a plan for the Arabs future, based on "solidarity, fraternity, and hard work for realizing peace in the region."(end)
