"It is impossible to rescue Lebanon without participation of all political parties according to al-Taif Accord,"
DAMASCUS, Vice President Farouk al-Shara renewed Syria's rejection of war in Iraq, stressing support to the political process in the country based on a genuine national reconciliation and a timetable for the foreign troop's withdrawal from it.
Al-Shara was speaking at a lecture in Damascus University Wednesday on the occasion of referendum on a new constitutional term for President Bashar al-Assad.
He criticized the double standard policy adopted by the US in dealing with the human issues, wondering about the absence of tribunals to try war crimes perpetrated in Iraq, which claimed the lives of 600.000 civilians since the beginning of the US occupation, while the UN is called to issue a resolution on a court in a single issue that investigation into it is not over yet."
Vice President pointed out to the nature of the new international system and to the US interference in resolutions issued by UN Security Council and its role in obstructing efforts that help settle pending problems on the Arab and regional levels.
"The majority of UN Security Council resolutions and sanctions were issued by a US motive that targeted interests of the peoples, not the officials of those states," al-Shara said.
He reviewed attempts, during the past 15 years, to amend the UN Charter, "but it remained as it is, and it has been left behind amid a lot of pressures and dictations on the Security Council."
On the Palestinian issue, Vice President criticized international silence towards Israeli unfair practices against the Palestinian people and the arresting of members at the democratically- elected Palestinian government, while the Israeli use of destructive weapons against the Palestinians is justified.
As for peace process, al-Shara underlined that Israel is not serious about peace or about withdrawing from the occupied Arab territories, describing what is going on now in this regards as "Israeli maneuvers."
Regarding the Syrian-US relations, Vice President said "Syria conducted a dialogue with the US," wondering about the range of this administration's seriousness and its willingness to make any political settlement for the Middle East problems a success."
On the situation in Lebanon, al-Shara described Syrian-Lebanese brotherly relations as deep, saying "what is going on in this regard is a fabrication of disputes as a result of the weak horizon of some Lebanese politicians or of instructions from western capitals."
"It is impossible to rescue Lebanon without participation of all political parties according to al-Taif Accord," Vice President noted, calling the Lebanese to select best formulas for a national reconciliation."
On the phenomenon of extremist groups as "Jund al-sham and Fatah al-Islam', al-Shara said that those groups couldn't find a resort except in a weak and divided country, saying "such groups didn't come from emptiness, but they were found because of the absence of the state."
He underlined that people in Syria became now more satisfied and confident with future under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad due to his courage and wisdom in dealing with the most dangerous external threats and repercussions.
"Syrian people's support to President al-Assad was best embodied by the mass marches witnessed all over Syrian cities, "al-Shara added.
"In spite of the Arab deteriorating situation during this time because of the absence of cooperation and solidarity and the complications of international situation, Syria has been able to remain steadfast, thanks to President al-Assad's deep vision in facing difficulties." Vice-President concluded.
